San Francisco Events: Festival of Sail

The Festival of Sail started on Wednesday, July 23rd with the Parade of Sail. Hundreds of water craft including over 35 tall ships sailed under the Golden Gate into The San Francisco Bay on Wednesday to kick of The Festival of Sail that went on until Sunday, July 27th. Three villages were set up along the San Francisco Waterfront.

The Green Village was at Piers 30 and 32 and hosted several exhibitors representing organizations that had unlimited amounts of information on how to lead a more eco-friendly life. The International Village was set at Justin Herman Plaza and the Ferry Building and truly exhibited the rich cultural diversity that makes San Francisco such a unique and special place. The Marine Education Village at Aquatic Park and Hyde Street Pier was a wonderful place for children and adults alike to learn about Maritime history.

The weather was gorgeous, and sailing excursions were available on all days of the festival. They included adventure sails, ecological sails, and there were even mock battles where the ships raced each other and “set cannons off.” All in all, it was a great time to be at San Francisco’s glorious waterfront and on the bay.
