Summary of the Lombard Neighbors Meeting - October 21, 2008

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

For those of you who were not able to attend The Lombard Neighbors meeting, it was a very informative meeting, and the San Francisco Police Department was present again to provide insider information pertaining to our community.  The following are some key points that were touched upon:

  • How to report the following:  vehicle vandalism, vehicle break-ins, burglaries, and other crimes that have already occured
  • How to spot suspicious activity in your neighborhood and what to do about it
  • Building a beneficial relationship with the San Francisco Police officers from your Northern District Police Station
  • How to improve the quality of life in our community
  • Who to call and what steps to take for non police matters
  • Starting a building and/or neighborhood watch group with the help of the San Francisco SAFE organization

The above points will be further elaborated in individual upcoming blog posts.  The focus of this group is to get to know our neighbors, unify the community, and build a relationship with the police department and the SAFE organization of San Francisco.  Our goal is to have a presence in our neighborhood, so that we can move towards deterring crime, notifying the appropriate people when there are problems in our neighborhood, and improving the quality of life in our community.

Are you Ready for the Next Big Earthquake in San Francisco?

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

This evening, Matt Springer from UCSF put on a great earthquake preparedness seminar.  Unfortunately, the Vice Presidential debate took precedence over filling all seats at the Marina Branch Library.  Perhaps a small turnout, yet Matt really puts things into perspective.  Take, for example, this question he proposed: “Why do you lock your door while you are gone?”  Obviously because you don’t want to be burglarized while you are away.  So if you are prepared for burglary everyday, are you prepared for the next big one?  You may never be burglarized in San Francisco, but we’ll definitely have another earthquake in San Francisco.  We’ve all heard the phrase: “It’s going to happen. It’s only a matter of time.”

Matt also covered the basic supplies everyone should really have on hand at home and work.  The following are a few tips from Matt:

  • brace your bookcases
  • secure frames that are hanging on the walls (and remove ones from above where people sleep)
  • plan a meeting place for your family

If you’re really a true believer when it comes to being prepared, like myself, you’ll even put a small kit in the trunk of your car.   There is plenty of resources on the web to find how to be ready for the next quake.  You just have to take the time to do it.If you would like a pdf of an Emergency Kit Checklist, email me at matthew@buysellSFhomes.com, or call me at (415) 734-8322.

Home Preparedness in Earthquake Country at the Marina Library

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

The Marina Library will be hosting a special lecture this Thursday, October 2nd titled “Home Preparedness in Earthquake Country.”  The event will be held from 6:30-7:30 pm.  Matt Springer, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco, will give a talk and slideshow about precautions that can be taken to lessen the damage of an earthquake at home and work.  His presentation includes many photos and preparations in his own home and suggests measures ranging from simple to complex to prepare for the next major earthquake.

Where to Stop for Wine Tasting in the Marina District in San Francisco

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

Nectar Wine Lounge in the MarinaNumber one on my list is the Nectar Wine Lounge on Steiner between Chestnut and Lombard. Upon entering, you will find some cozy and comfortable chairs to take a seat in, or you can sit at the bar and chat with the staff. The wine list is great, and they have a variety of flights that change frequently. The flight that we had included a great Malbec and Shiraz. At the suggestion of one of the staff members, we tried a sparkling shiraz which was fabulous. The night was wrapped up with a tasty plate of different cheeses. The staff was very engaging and informative. We even bought a bottle of the sparkling shiraz to take home.

Needless to say, I will be back at Nectar. It is very spacious, and the ambiance, extensive wine and bubbly list, and wonderful small plates and appetizers make Nectar a must visit place in the Marina.

How SAFE and the San Francisco Police Department Are Teaming up With the Marina

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

The Lombard Neighbors meeting was held on Tuesday, August 19th, and was a success. The SAFE organization and officers of the Northern District in the San Francisco Police Department were present to discuss safety issues for residents who live in the area bordered by Greenwich, Bay, Van Ness, and Gough. This group is being referred to as the Lombard Neighbors and will be holding bi-monthly meetings.

The following is a recap of issues that were discussed at the meeting:

  • Neighbors who are interested in starting a neighborhood watch group for their block or even building can gather 2-5 people to begin a planning committee. SAFE will come out and help the planning committee establish a successful neighborhood watch group.
  • The Lombard Neighbors will continue to meet ever other month to discuss any newly created neighborhood watches, compare notes, and address any issues affecting this “sub” neighborhood within the Marina.
  • SAFE is available to come out to buildings and do a safety audit of the building for interested landlords.
  • A Yahoo Group is now established for members of the community to join, and keep each other posted on anything new in the neighborhood. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact me so I can add you to the group.
  • SFPD officers encourage open communication and interaction with the officers of the Northern District so that everyone is on the same page regarding neighborhood safety. Get to know your district officers.
  • The next Lombard Neighbors Meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 21st.

Safety Tip: If you witness a crime in progress, obviously call 911. However, did you know that if you call 911 from your cellular phone, you may be reaching CHP due to the signal from your cell phone bouncing to a different cell tower? Your best bet is to call (415) 553-8090. This is the emergency number for San Francisco. It gets routed the same way 911 does and receives the same priority. Store this number in your cell phone for future reference.
